Size & Grade
These are wild Maine river otter pelts. They were sustainably, ethically, and legally harvested by trappers in Maine. The pelts are heavy furred prime pelts. They are harvested during Maine’s trapping season, when pelts are at their best and most prime condition. Maine and Northen New England river otters are noted for their high-quality prime fur, that is generally darker in color compared to Midwest or Southern otter. They have been professionally handled and then garment tanned by Moyle & Mink Tannery in Idaho. 

The fur is very soft, beautiful, silky, and luxurious. They would be extremely good pelts for any garment that you are making or having made. They would also be excellent pelts for wall displays. They are not suited for taxidermy. They each are uniquely different. No two pelts are alike. Colorations and size are similar but vary from pelt to pelt. All otter pelts are shipped with a USFWS Cites tag attached to the pelt to show the otter was legally harvested. If you are purchasing multiple pelts for a garment and would like the pelts color matched… please mention that in the comments with your order, and we can do our best to pick similar pelts. 

We sell all our pelts by size and grade. Size is measured from tip of nose to tip of tail. 

XXXL: Over 53"

XXL: 48-53"

XL: 44-48"

L/M: 39-44"

Our three grades are Extra Select, Premium, and Standard.  

Extra Select: We reserve this grade for our absolute best pelts. The quality is exceptional. Since all our pelts are wild pelts, we get very few Extra Select pelts. These are fully primed heavily furred pelts with little to no defects. If there are any holes, they are few and small. The tails and faces are in good condition.  Eye openings may be slightly irregular and enlarged due to the tanning or USFWS tagging process. 

Premium: Since we try to only harvest our wild pelts during the prime season, these are the bulk of the pelts that we receive. Overall, they are exceptional pelts, excellent for garments or wall hangers. They are prime pelts, but not quite good enough that we can call them an Extra Select. That could be due to a hole or defects. Small defects are possible. Holes will be minimal and not easily noticed. Generally, the faces and tails are still good.  Eye openings may be slightly irregular and enlarged due to the tanning or USFWS tagging process. 

Standard: We reserve this grade for our semi-heavy pelts or pelts that are harvested slightly past or slightly before prime. For our otter pelts, any pelts that are naturally singed automatically get graded as standard. Singing is a natural condition that can happen to wild otter often later in the Winter where their fur tips will curl giving a singed look. These pelts are usually heavily furred and very prime, but the natural singe is considered a defect. The faces or tails may have some damage. There may be more holes that will need to be repaired for garment making. These pelts are good for wall hangers. They also can be good for garments, but will sometimes require more repairs, and the fur quality will be slightly less than our Premium pelts. Overall, they are a terrific value pelt. Eye openings may be slightly irregular and enlarged due to the tanning or USFWS tagging process. 

You will receive a pelt similar to one pictured. You are purchasing one pelt for selected grade and size. No international shipping. Feel free to message us with any questions before ordering. Returns are not accepted on pelts. Cancellations are allowed only before the order ships.
